Nobody outside this industry understands what actually happens inside salons and spas.
You are there the week before the wedding and the week after the funeral. You hear the
diagnosis before the family does. You hand somebody their confidence back after
a year of not recognizing themselves after a break up, or
applying for their dream job.
You hold space for the divorce glow up, the first date, the first day of chemo, shaving
someone’s hair during chemo, and feeling like yourself again during a health journey.
People tell you things they have not told anyone, and
then you turn around and do it again for the next person, and the one after that.
Every single day. You celebrate, cheerlead and even cry with clients sometimes.
What we do is so much deeper than beauty or wellness. We genuinely love and care for our
clients. It is actually about self love, healing, human connection,
empathy, intuition, emotional intelligence, holding space, relationships and building
community. It takes more than good technique to be successful, and even good soft skills
are only the foundation of the work we do with people.
Often we take care of everyone else and we are last on the list.
You were taught technique, theory, protocols and how to build a clientele. Nobody taught
you what to do with everything you absorb in a day, or how to keep giving it away for
thirty years without running out. Our job is emotional,
mental, physical and yes, even spiritual.
